Founded in 1958 during the "Great Leap Forward" period, when the nation was in the midst of a fervor for "big steel production," the Yunnan Provincial Department of Light Industry, following directives from the central Ministry of Light Industry, tasked the Yunnan Cigarette Factory with developing a new product that would surpass the British "Capstan." In July 1958, "云烟" officially entered production. The characters "云烟" in the trademark are inspired by the authentic calligraphy of the ancient Chinese master Wang Xizhi.

创牌于1958年“大跃进”时期。当时，全国正处于“大炼钢铁”的高潮中，云南省轻工业厅根据中央轻工业部的指示，要云南纸烟厂研制一种新产品，并且要超过英国的“茄力克”。1958年7月，“云烟”正式投入生产。 “云烟”商标中“云烟”二字拓自中国古代大书法家王羲之的真迹。
