The 中南海 (Zhongnanhai) cigarettes were initially produced as a special supply by the Beijing Cigarette Factory, entering the market in 1976 through external trial sales. The "中南海" brand was established in 1983, becoming an essential part of China's tobacco industry's efforts to elevate cigarette quality. In 1985, the project on "Tobacco Mixtures and Their Preparation Methods" was awarded the third prize for scientific and technological progress by the People's Republic of China, marking it as one of the first national-level scientific awards in the tobacco industry. In 2004, the brand received the second prize for the project on "Research on Technologies to Reduce Harmful Components in Cigarette Smoke." The "中南海" brand was honored as one of the "Top Quality Cigarettes in the National Tobacco Industry" in 2001 and earned the title of "Famous Trademark of Beijing" continuously from 1999 to 2013. It was also recognized as a "User Satisfaction Product" for the years 2010-2012.

中南海卷烟最早为北京卷烟厂生产的特供烟，1976年中对外试销，由此进入市场。 “中南海”品牌创牌于1983年，是中国烟草“卷烟上水平”重要的组成部分。 1985年完成的“烟草混合物及其制备方法”项目荣获中华人民共和国科学技术进步三等奖，是烟草行业最早获得的国家级科技进步奖。2004年度再次以“降低卷烟烟气中有害成分的技术研究”项目荣获中华人民共和国科学技术进步二等奖。 “中南海”品牌曾荣获“2001年度全国烟草行业名优卷烟”。1999~2013年连续获得“北京市著名商标”称号。获得“2010-2012年度用户满意产品”。
